Health and Safety Policy

Northern Dance Theatre (NDT) is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students, staff, and visitors. This policy outlines our procedures and expectations regarding health and safety in our studio.

  1. General Safety
    • All studio spaces are regularly inspected for potential hazards.
    • Emergency exits are clearly marked and kept unobstructed at all times.
    • First aid kits are available in each studio and the main office.
    • At least one staff member certified in First Aid and CPR is present during all class times.
  2. Illness Policy
    • Students should not attend class if they have a fever, are vomiting, or have any contagious illness.
    • Students must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication before returning to class.
    • If a student becomes ill during class, a parent/guardian will be contacted for immediate pick-up.
  3. Injury Prevention and Management
    • Proper warm-up and cool-down are integral parts of every class.
    • Students must inform their instructor of any pre-existing injuries or health conditions.
    • In case of injury during class:
    • The instructor will assess the situation and provide first aid if necessary.
    • Parents/guardians will be notified of any significant injuries.
    • For serious injuries, emergency services will be called.
  4. Allergies and Medical Conditions
    • Parents/guardians must inform NDT of any allergies or medical conditions on the registration form.
    • Students with severe allergies must provide an EpiPen to be kept at the studio.
    • Staff are trained on how to respond to common medical emergencies.
  5. Studio Cleanliness
    • Dance floors and barres are cleaned and sanitized daily.
    • Changing rooms and bathrooms are cleaned and sanitized regularly.
    • Hand sanitizer is available in all studio spaces.
  6. Proper Attire and Footwear
    • Students must adhere to the dress code to prevent trips, falls, or other injuries.
    • Appropriate dance shoes must be worn for each class type.
  7. Hydration
    • Students are encouraged to bring water bottles to class.
    • Water breaks are provided during longer classes.
  8. Physical Contact
    • Instructors may use appropriate physical contact for the purpose of alignment and correction.
    • Students uncomfortable with physical corrections should inform their instructor.
  9. Emergency Procedures
    • Fire evacuation routes are posted in each studio.
    • Regular fire and emergency drills are conducted.
    • In case of severe weather, students will be moved to designated safe areas within the building.
  10. Building Security
    • All external doors remain unlocked during class times.
    • Visitors must check in at the main office.
    • Students under 12 must be picked up inside the studio by a parent/guardian.
  11. Reporting Concerns
    • Students and parents are encouraged to report any safety concerns to the studio management immediately.

By participating in classes at NDT, students and parents acknowledge that they have read and agree to comply with this Health and Safety Policy. NDT reserves the right to modify this policy as needed to ensure the ongoing safety of our dance community.
