Inclement Weather and Emergency Closure Policy

Northern Dance Theatre (NDT) prioritizes the safety of our students, families, and staff. This policy outlines our procedures for inclement weather situations and other emergency closures.

  1. Decision-Making Process
    • NDT will monitor local weather reports and emergency notifications.
    • Decisions on closures or delays will be made as early as possible, typically by 2:00 PM for evening classes and 7:00 AM for morning classes.
    • We may follow local school district closure decisions but reserve the right to make independent determinations.
  2. Types of Schedule Changes
    a) Closure: All classes and activities are canceled for the day.
    b) Delayed Opening: Classes will begin later than scheduled.
    c) Early Dismissal: Classes will end earlier than scheduled due to worsening conditions.
  3. Notification Methods
    • Email: Primary method of communication for closures and schedule changes.
    • Website: Closure information will be posted prominently on our homepage.
    • Social Media: Updates will be posted on our official Facebook and Instagram accounts.
    • Text Alerts: Opt-in service for emergency text notifications.
  4. Make-Up Classes
    • NDT will attempt to schedule make-up classes for those canceled due to weather or emergencies.
    • If make-up classes are not possible, a credit may be applied to the following month’s tuition.
    • No refunds will be issued for classes missed due to weather or emergency closures.
  5. Parent/Student Responsibility
    • Families should ensure their contact information is up-to-date for emergency notifications.
    • Check email and the studio website if inclement weather is forecasted.
    • Use personal judgment about safe travel, even if the studio remains open.
  6. Partial Day Closures
    • If weather worsens during the day, NDT may close for evening classes.
    • Parents will be notified as early as possible about any changes to the daily schedule.
  7. Other Emergency Closures
    • NDT may close for other emergencies (e.g., power outages, water main breaks).
    • The same notification procedures will be followed for non-weather related closures.
  8. Remote Class Options
    • In cases of extended closures, NDT may offer online classes when feasible.
    • Information about accessing online classes will be communicated via email.
  9. Staff Procedures
    • Staff members will be notified of closures through a designated communication channel.
    • Staff should not report to work if the studio is closed unless specifically requested.
  10. Special Events and Performances
    • Decisions about special events or performances during inclement weather will be made on a case-by-case basis.
    • Every effort will be made to notify participants at least 3 hours before the scheduled event time.
  11. Building Safety
    • If students are in the building when an emergency closure is announced, staff will remain until all students are safely picked up.
  12. Policy Updates
    • This policy may be updated as needed to ensure the safety of our dance community.
    • Any changes will be communicated to families via email.

NDT appreciates your understanding and cooperation during unexpected closures. Our primary concern is always the safety of our students, families, and staff.
