Northern Dance Theatre (NDT) is committed to providing a safe environment for all students and staff. This policy outlines our approach to injury prevention and management.
- Injury Prevention
a) Warm-up and Cool-down:
• All classes will include appropriate warm-up and cool-down exercises.
• Students arriving late must warm up before joining class activities. b) Proper Technique:
• Instructors will emphasize correct technique to minimize risk of injury.
• Students must follow instructor guidance on proper execution of movements. c) Appropriate Progression:
• Skills will be taught in a progressive manner appropriate to each student’s level and ability. d) Facility Safety:
• Dance floors and equipment will be regularly inspected and maintained.
• Any hazards should be reported immediately to staff. - Student Responsibilities
• Inform instructors of any pre-existing injuries, medical conditions, or medications.
• Notify instructors immediately if experiencing pain or discomfort during class.
• Follow all safety instructions provided by instructors.
• Maintain proper nutrition and hydration. - Injury Disclosure
• Students must disclose any injuries sustained outside of NDT that may affect their participation.
• A doctor’s note may be required before returning to class after a significant injury. - In-Class Injury Management
• If a student is injured during class:- The instructor will assess the situation and provide first aid if necessary.
- Parents/guardians will be notified promptly for any significant injury.
- An incident report will be completed by the instructor.
- First Aid
• First aid kits are available in each studio and the main office.
• At least one staff member certified in First Aid and CPR will be present during operating hours. - Returning to Dance After Injury
• Students must provide a medical clearance note before returning to full participation after a significant injury.
• NDT may require a gradual return to dance, following medical advice. - Chronic Conditions
• Students with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes) should provide an action plan from their doctor.
• Relevant staff will be informed of student medical needs while maintaining confidentiality. - Emergency Procedures
• In case of a severe injury, staff will call emergency services and then notify parents/guardians.
• Students are required to have current emergency contact information on file. - Insurance
• NDT carries general liability insurance, but this does not cover student injuries.
• Families are encouraged to maintain their own health and accident insurance. - Education
• NDT will provide periodic workshops on injury prevention, nutrition, and dance health.
• Resources on dance health and safety will be made available to students and parents. - Modifications
• Instructors may modify exercises or limit participation for students recovering from injury.
• Students and parents should communicate any needed accommodations.
By enrolling in classes at NDT, students and parents acknowledge that they have read and agree to comply with this Injury Prevention and Management Policy. Our goal is to foster a safe environment where students can thrive in their dance education.
