Northern Dance Theatre (NDT) invests significantly in props and costumes to enhance performances and the overall dance experience. This policy outlines the proper care, use, and responsibilities related to props and costumes.
- Costume Care
a) Storage:
• Costumes should be hung properly on hangers when not in use.
• Store costumes in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight.
• Use the provided garment bag for transportation and storage. b) Cleaning:
• Follow specific cleaning instructions provided with each costume.
• Do not wash or dry clean costumes without permission from NDT staff.
• Report any stains or damage immediately to the costume coordinator. c) Alterations:
• Minor alterations (e.g., hemming) may be performed by parents/guardians.
• Major alterations must be approved and performed by NDT’s costume team. - Prop Handling
• Handle all props with care and use only as instructed by teachers.
• Report any damage to props immediately to the instructor or studio staff.
• Never remove props from the studio without explicit permission. - Costume and Prop Check-Out
• Costumes and props may only be checked out for approved events or photo sessions.
• A check-out form must be completed and signed before removing any item from the studio.
• Items must be returned by the agreed-upon date in the same condition as when checked out. - Lost or Damaged Items
• Students/parents are responsible for the full replacement cost of lost costumes or props.
• Damage beyond normal wear and tear may result in repair or replacement fees. - Performance Day Procedures
• Arrive at performances with costumes properly hung and transported in garment bags.
• Keep all costume pieces and accessories together in a designated area backstage.
• Do not eat or drink (except water) while in costume without protecting the costume. - End of Season Return
• All borrowed costumes and props must be returned within two weeks of the final performance.
• Items should be clean and in good condition upon return. - Personal Items
• Label all personal items (shoes, tights, etc.) with the student’s name.
• NDT is not responsible for lost or stolen personal items. - Costume Fees
• Costume fees are non-refundable once orders have been placed.
• Costume fees do not imply ownership; costumes remain property of NDT unless otherwise specified. - Prohibited Actions
• Do not share, loan, or wear costumes for non-NDT events without permission.
• Photography in costumes is only allowed at designated photo sessions or performances. - Special Care Instructions
• Some costumes or props may have specific care instructions.
• These will be provided when the item is distributed and must be followed carefully. - Student Responsibilities
• Students are expected to treat all costumes and props with respect.
• Report any issues, damage, or poor fit to the instructor or costume coordinator promptly. - Parent/Guardian Support
• Parents/guardians are asked to assist younger students in proper costume and prop care.
• Help ensure all items are accounted for and properly stored after each use.
By participating in NDT productions, students and parents/guardians agree to adhere to this Props and Costume Care Policy. Proper care of these items ensures their longevity and helps keep production costs manageable for everyone.
